California Traditional Folk Music
And Songs
Traditional folk music, including California traditional folk music and songs, utilizes the
old storytelling styles and words that were passed down from generation to generation. Traditional melodies were
also incorporated into the early styles of the traditional folk songs. Like all other styles of music; however,
folk music has developed to embrace new stories, new music and new instruments.
California traditional folk music songs utilize nearly every kind of human activity including love, heartbreak,
politics and freedom to name just a few. The character of ethnic and social groups and even a nation is expressed
during folk jam sessions.
California folk songs are the music of people and resonate in the hearts of everyone. It can
express political or religious beliefs or in a session of storytelling to describe history and it can just simply
provide entertainment.
The preservation of folk music has developed many organizations on a national level as well as smaller local
levels. The music that really took flight in the 1930’s and reached its peak in the 1970’s can still be enjoyed in
jams and concerts today.
A folk music concert today can vary in style as the songs themselves can be classified into different types.
Included is the ballad that tells a story, often about real events; sung in stanza form with a melody that repeats
for each verse.
Additionally, folk concerts feature a faster style of music that focuses on a particular occupation, activity or
set of circumstances that creates emotion and causes a person to dance in celebration. This type of style uses
prison songs, work songs and war songs to create an agreement with the musician and the listener to unite, at
times, the entire nation.
In addition, traditional folk songs include spiritual songs, children’s songs and songs about life’s stages and
journey. Many of the songs are for celebration, dance and entertainment while others are to tell an important story
that must be remembered. No matter what the song’s intent, traditional folk music will never die and can at times
be found in today’s main stream music, when you look hard enough.
