Tribute To The California Traditional Music Society
Traditional folk music got its roots from old ethnic storytelling that was passed down from
generation to generation when settlers moved their lives to America. The heart of folk music is drawn from African,
Irish, Native American and British roots to name a few.
The preservation of folk music has been a goal of many people; however, the California Traditional Music Society
has surpassed many organizations in their preservation as well as continuance and a tribute to the California
Traditional Music Society must be made.
People travel from all over the world to gather on America’s west coast to enjoy the annual Summer Solstice Folk
Music festival held each June. These enthusiasts will enjoy the California traditional folk music with styles such
as storytelling, ballads, prison songs, war songs and songs that will just have you up in dance
and celebration. In addition to this festival are others that are sponsored by folk
organizations so that people can continue to enjoy this genre of music all year long.
California’s Storytelling Festival is another grand attraction for folk music enthusiasts and is held at nearly
the same time as the Solstice festival. For nearly 30 years the Storytelling Festival has drawn folk music lovers
to celebrate in listening and dancing but also to learn about folk music as well as how to participate in it.
Whether it is folk dancing, fiddle playing or song writing folk music enthusiasts are there to teach as well as
entertain.
These festivals attract people from all over the world because they have the quality and entertainment value
that is sought in any entertainment and arts society. Looking for a way to spend your summer vacation? Consider
America’s west coast for entertainment, education, beauty and enrichment.
The traditional genre that began with the melting pot, built its foundation in the 1930’s, hit its peak in
1970’s and continues today at the many festivals. Folk music today can even occasionally be found in main stream
music thanks to artists such as Ani DiFranco and her dedication and talent.
